The New Lexicon offers music and musicology students a sustained framework in which to deepen the artistic, analytical, historical, and philosophical dimensions of their work. Over several months, participants can move beyond the compressed exchange of a single class, workshop, or conference and develop questions through presentation, response, revision, and public articulation.
The programme provides an opportunity to clarify concepts implicit in musical and scholarly decisions; advance compositions, performances, analyses, essays, and research projects through substantive feedback; develop more precise languages for presenting and contextualizing work; test artistic and theoretical propositions within an international community; and encounter methods, repertoires, and intellectual traditions beyond one’s usual field of reference.
Participants will also be able to situate their projects within wider historical, philosophical, technological, institutional, and political debates. This contextualization is not intended to displace close engagement with music. It enables participants to understand more clearly how musical ideas depend upon, resist, or transform the conditions through which they become available.
The residency may generate new artistic directions, research questions, presentation formats, and intellectual relationships. It creates a basis for future collaborations, publications, lectures, performances, and further study beyond the programme’s formal duration. Its value lies not in delivering one model of success, but in equipping participants to formulate stronger questions, make more deliberate methodological choices, and communicate the significance of their work with greater precision.
